In Summer 2015 Signal Fire premiered the Tinderbox Residency, which supports an artist to work ‘embedded’ with a grassroots environmental defense group, and to produce a body of work in response to the group’s mission or current campaigns.

The inaugural Tinderbox is a collaboration with Bark, defenders of Mt. Hood National Forest.

The selected artist will be given introduction and access to Bark’s mission, current campaigns, and physical office space. They will work closely with the Portland-based staff and volunteers in town and in the field to develop a body of work specific to the experience.

Signal Fire will provide the selected artist with a modest stipend each month, give logistical support, and lend gear as needed. The work resulting from Tinderbox will be considered for the Leaf Litter #6 or special exhibitions as may apply. Please note: this first iteration of Tinderbox does not include housing or studio space, so this may be most appropriate for a local artist.
